Harbour atmosphere at it's best

A harbour atmosphere at its best, big city living and maritime attractions – the North Sea city of Wilhelmshaven located on the southern Jadebusen bay has far more to offer than sea and sun. Recreational holidays at the seaside combined with a wide range of relaxing leisure and vibrant cultural attractions in a modern metropolis: Wilhelmshaven offers something for everyone.

Five worlds of experience are lined up at the Wilhelmshaven Maritime Mile (Maritime Meile Wilhelmshaven) all bringing home the subject of the “ocean” to the visitor: The Coastal Museum (Küstenmuseum), the Aquarium, the German Navy Museum (Deutsches Marinemuseum), the “UNESCO-World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Center” (UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe Wattenmeer Besucherzentrum), and harbour cruises on the MS Harle Kurier.

A striking landmark of the city is the Emperor William Bridge (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke) that is over 100 years old. The iron structure towers above the Großer Hafen section of the harbour. Every year countless traditional sailing ships drop anchor here from all over Europe, especially for the “Weekend on the Jade” (“Wochenende an der Jade”) renowned far beyond the city’s borders and for the “JadeWeser-Port-CUP”. A colourful fringe events programme of music, entertainment, games and enjoyment lures thousands of visitors to the city on the River Jade.

From the beach, the Südstrandpromenade, you will have an excellent view of the UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. In season harbour cruises and excursions to the deepsea island of Helgoland start from here. A futuristic harbour experience can be head up close at the JadeWeserPort oceanic construction site. Germany’s only deepwater port is able to handle the world’s biggest container ships since 2012.

Sailing, surfing, rowing or canoeing – the conditions for watersports fanatics are ideal here. If you prefer to remain on terra firma you will still get your money’s worth here, i.e. you can play a game of golf or go cycling.
