Göttingen

A university city rich in tradition and quality of life

Göttingen – the city of science, the university city, the student city, the city of Gauss and Lichtenberg.

Far beyond its borders, however, Göttingen is also known as the city of festivals, where theatre, literature and music play an important role. The International Handel Festival is as a prominent feature on the annual calendar of events as the jazz festival or the Literaturherbst literary festival.

An extensive pedestrian zone runs right through the historic city centre, defined by medieval churches and the magnificent old town hall. Attractive side streets lined with special shops and various cafes, bars and restaurants invite you to wander and linger awhile. Summers are marked by the Mediterranean flair of the street cafes, while winter is best enjoyed in one of the many cosy restaurants offering worldwide cuisine to suit all tastes and budgets.

Conveniently located in the heart of Germany, Göttingen is unrivalled in terms of optimal transport connections. The city can easily be reached in no time at all by road and rail from all directions, e.g. by bus and car via the main north-south autobahn, the A7, and the new east-west autobahn, the A38. Over 100 daily ICE connections ensure convenient access by rail. Göttingen is a lively, attractive, easily accessible, multifaceted city, well worth visiting.
